FINDING YOUR PURPOSE

How We Work book with Deba Wilson

Hi guys! How was everyone’s weekend? The weather is still sooooo cold here! It’s the perfect reading weather, so I spent my Sunday finishing up How We Work: Live Your Purpose, Reclaim Your Sanity, and Embrace the Daily Grind. One of my big goals for this year was to read more. This book is all about finding your purpose in what you do, uncovering what your mission is in this world and how to manage the work-life balance. I’ve already taken so many parts to heart and I really found this book to be sooooo thought-provoking!

When Tim, Trevor and I started this blog, we put in a lot of long hours and many all-nighters. I felt like in order to reach my goals, I had to work as hard as I could for as long as possible. I was allowing myself to be so busy that I didn’t feel present and I wasn’t living in the moment. That’s when I decided it was time to take a different approach to things. I started to set weekly challenges for myself, including reading more positive and inspiring books to keep me on track. Even if it’s just for a few minutes, I love to start or end my day with something positive.

In How We Work, Leah Weiss shares evidence-based strategies for practicing mindfulness. How we feel AT work and ABOUT our work matters. She writes, “The paradox is that being mindful of our experience of our work, even to our dissatisfaction, disengagement, and ambivalence, is the first step toward turning it around. Indeed, paying attention to our feelings is the very definition of mindfulness.” I loved this thought and it really hit home for me. WHAT you give power to WILL have power over you. Mindfulness can bring better ideas to light and can give you the confidence that the small things you’re doing on a daily basis contribute to a higher purpose. Treat yourself (or an upcoming graduate!) to this book – you’ll be grateful you did!

What are YOU reading right now? Tell meeeee!
